Happy Day after Thanksgiving 🦃🍂
We have been here at Georgia Veterans State Park for almost 6 weeks now.
It tooks us awhile to get into a groove. This park is run by a concessionaire, Coral Hospitality. Its a big operation, with a hotel and conference center, golf course, archery range, restaurants, and more.
I don't know about the Hotel but the campground is mainly run by the hosts. Basically we are on our own. Another host took us by the hand and got us our golf cart and keys, showed us around. Told us where to get supplies. They had been running the 82 spot campground on their own cleaning 2 of the bath houses. The other bath house was cleaned by a paid park employee. Badly, I might add. Thats the one we inherited, it looked like a haunted house it had so many gnat filled cobwebs. YUK! But we whipped it into shape. We are hosts for Loop 1. It's good we are self starters. (From Brian) you can eat off bathroom floors. (From Ruth), but you really wouldnt want to.😜
Another Host couple came in and we all got together and worked out our schedule as up to that point we were working 7 days a week. Now we work 4 on, 2 off. Anywhere from 1 hour to 8 hours depending on what we feel like doing for the park. We are required to work 24 hours a week between the 2 of us for our Full Hookup site with WiFi and cable TV.
All is good now and we are enjoying ourselves. Below are some photos telling of our time here.
This is Ruth watching the Tennessee Vols play the Alabama Crimson Tide. That was the best football game we have ever seen. We are enjoying watching football on the weekends. Following the Kansas City Chiefs also, which is our sis-in-law, Maryann's favorite team.
Sitting around the Campfire with some of the hosts.
Brian helping a camper air up his bike tire.
We have a lot of White tail deer here in the Park. We saw 13 Does followed by a Buck this morning.
Cotton field at sunset. Taken on our way to Americus GA, where we do our shopping 25 miles away. We are in the middle of cotton fields, Pecan orchards, and peanuts.
While we were down in West Palm Beach avoiding Hurricane Ian, Ruth developed a infected tooth. Insult to injury. I, Ruth had to find an emergency dentist and have a root canal on a Saturday. Followed up by 3 more dental appointments. So on October 25th we had to drive the 8 hours back to West Palm Beach from Georgia for the final crown. We made the best of it and spent the night and took the opportunity to go out to sushi. Then made the 8 hour drive back.
On Saturdays Brian dog sits Lily. Her Mom and Dad are Hosts on the Antique train, the SAM Shortline railroad that is homed at our park and cared for by Volunteer Hosts here at the campground. She loves riding in the golf cart.
Brian watching the RC planes flying at the Parade Ground at the Park.
We needed to go to a post office. Plains, Georgia, 35 miles away was the closest town on a Wednesday that had a Post Office open. Home of President Jimmy Carter. (still) It was a small charming town, that reminded me of Mayberry. You know, the town where Andy and Barney are the sheriff's. The Postmistress was a charmer, she told us that Jimmy had come to see her a couple of weeks ago. You know, "I dated his brother, she says". Not Billy. We forget which one. I guess if you want to know the towns scuttlebutt, you talk to the Postmistress.
Brian hung some Christmas lights up, and tomorrow is the treelighting in Plains.
We hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and are enjoying some leftovers tonight.OXOX Ruth & Brian
