Greetings from Georgia Veterans Memorial Park

As we suspected, we could not  return to Koreshan state park in Estero, Florida.  Most of the barrier island parks south of Fort Myers were either gone or uninhabitable.😢
Koreshan was damaged, but not to the point that it couldn't be used as a placement for strike teams and Rangers who had lost their homes and parks.
There was no room for volunteers, at least not for a month or two.
So.....

The maintenance Ranger (Dan) was very upset that he was not involved in this decision, because Brian was fixing vehicles, tractors, hydraulics  and antique engines. They had a antique machine shop that Brian was going to machine parts to show the public how the machines worked. Brian is very disappointed he is not going back. Maybe next year. But not during hurricane season.

Ruth found a listing in the Georgia state park volunteer website for a camp hosting job in Veterans Memorial Park. We were scheduled to come to this park in January so we applied to this job.

We  spoke with the  volunteer coordinator,  Linda Hawkins and asked,  "Is the job for Camp Host, Loop 1, was still available"?  "Yes it is she replied, come on up."

Whew!!
So we drove 9 hours north to Georgia Veterans State Park.

It feels so good to be here.  80's during the day, but 50's at night, no humidity.  It feels like fall. We have a spot with privacy and a view of our Loop and  Lake Blackshear.  Full Hookup with Cable TV and WiFi.

We meet another host when we got here. He said let's get you a golf cart and some keys. Super laid back. They were glad we showed up. They have been short a camp host for this loop for awhile. So they were cleaning it in aditition to their loop. Bummer.

Lake Blackshear

Its a huge park on Lake Blackshear with a golf course, RC plane field, Hotel and Conference center, a marina, two restaurants,  a military museum, a campground and an antique train that takes visitors on day long themed train rides ( Polar express in December, Cheese and Wine tasting trips, Presidential trips to the town of Americus and Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carters home town)

Tomorrow morning we meet our boss Bobby and have our job orientation.  10 hours a week each volunteering for our camp spot.

Since we will be here for 6 months Brian finally bought a fishing license and a pole, so he can wake up early and fish on this lake. There are supposedly alligators in this lake, Yikes!!

We are so happy to land here. It feels like Oregon. We love the people we meet. People in the south are very polite. Most of the kids we meet are very respectful. They all say (Yes Ma'am   or No Ma'am)

We will post something soon.

Cheers!!  R&B
